CompEx certification for the water utilities industry

The CompEx Ex09-Ex10 Water utilities qualification has been developed for electrical and instrument operatives working in water supply, wastewater and water treatment sectors where gas, vapours and hazardous dust can potentially create a hazardous environment.

Attendees

This qualification is suitable for workers who operate in the water utilities industry, particularly in intake and storage areas of wastewater treatment plants, wastewater pumping stations, wet wells and gravity fed sewers where there is a risk of explosion.

Entry Requirements:

  • Practicing competent electrical operatives.
  • Practicing competent instrument operatives.
  • Electrical/instrument engineers with previous practical experience.
  • Prior CompEx certification supported by employer sponsored letter.

Duration

5 days plus 4 – 6 hours online E-learning undertaken prior to course commencement.

This course has been developed in consultation with industry to ensure the core competence of existing and potential workers who operate in the water utilities industry.

The qualification consists of two separate units which cover the minimum requirements for safe working practices in these areas.

Candidates will learn about legal obligations such as national regulations and the associated directives and standards.

Candidates will learn about the safety considerations that should be applied to work areas that contain potentially explosive or flammable atmospheres (Gas, Vapour and Dust) and the factors that are used to classify their location.

The course includes instruction on how to read hazardous area certification, labelling and documentation, and informs candidates about the main methods of protection, categories and levels that are applied to certified Ex electrical equipment.

Successful candidates will demonstrate the knowledge and skills to meet the requirements highlighted in the IEC 60079 series of standards and the relevant national standards WIMES (Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specification) 3.02D and directives. This qualification focuses on the minimum specifications identified in IEC60079:14 and IEC60079:17.
