Application Design Engineer (Ex12)
The CompEx Ex12 Application Design Engineer qualification has been developed to validate the core competency of application design engineers who specify electrical equipment within hazardous areas.
Attendees
This qualification is suitable for aspiring or practising application design engineers who have experience of selecting Ex certified electrical equipment for installations in locations where there is potential for explosive atmospheres to exist.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
The level of skills, knowledge and experience considered as a pre-requisite for this training programme will be left to the discretion of employers. However, the programme requires that personnel have a good understanding of basic electrical application design practice. Candidates would normally be expected to be educated to, as a minimum, HNC / HND (or equivalent) and have at least 2 years’ experience working in hazardous areas.
- A good working knowledge and recent experience of Electrical and (or) Instrument installation application design practice is assumed as a pre-requisite for this training course.
- A good working knowledge of 60079-14 is recommended prior to attending.
- Familiarity with manufacturers documentation including data sheets, certificates, etc is also recommended.
Successful completion of this or any other CompEx module is not intended to infer full occupational competence of the learner (candidate).
Duration
5 days
Total qualification time – will be dependent on the individual, but candidates should be encouraged by ATPs to participate in some course preparation* prior to attending and may require some self-directed learning during the course.
*Candidates may wish to enrol onto CompEx Knowledge Hub for access to additional pre course learning material and can do so by registering their details. To sign up, email leda@compex-cert.com
Delivery
This course module consists of two separate units.
Ex12a (Non-Intrinsically Safe equipment) and Ex12b (Intrinsically Safe equipment)
There are several (theory only) assessments with no practical elements throughout the course and this covers the minimum learning objectives for those application design engineers.
Responsibilities include undertaking the design and selection of appropriate certified electrical equipment and specification of installation requirements in areas where there is potential for explosive atmospheres to exist.
The CompEx Ex12 qualification has been developed in consultation with the industry to ensure that the core competence of application design engineers can be measured and provides a benchmark for employers to meet the competence requirements of the IEC 60079 Series of Standards.
Based upon the IEC standard 60079-14: Electrical installations design, selection and erection, the purpose of the Ex12 qualification is to instruct and assess the competence of candidates who are either practising or aspiring application design engineers.
The course consists of two separate units, Ex12a (Non-Intrinsically Safe equipment) and Ex12b (Intrinsically Safe equipment), which covers the minimum requirements for competence of electrical application design engineers, whose responsibilities include the selection of appropriate certified electrical equipment for pre-determined hazardous areas.
Key learning objectives
Candidates that successfully complete the Ex12 Application Design Engineer qualification will be able to:
Ex12a: meet the competency requirements of IEC 60079 -14 for ‘Designers (design & selection)’ for the design of Non-Intrinsically Safe electrical equipment installations in explosive atmospheres.
Ex12b: meet the competency requirements of IEC 60079 -14 for ‘Designers (design & selection)’ for the design of Intrinsically Safe electrical equipment installations in explosive atmospheres.
Qualification details
Candidates who are successful will receive a CompEx Certificate in Core Competence, valid for 5 years from date of issue.
Assessments
Candidates must undertake several examinations which cover both Ex12a and Ex12b learning objectives including:
- Core assessment.
- Marketing assessment.
- Standards assessment.
- Design assessment.

‘I thought the course was very well delivered & wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it’ – August 2022
‘After a nervous couple of weeks my certificate has finally come through, thanks to all at C&P Engineering, especially Tal, for delivering a fantastic course despite the heatwave’.
Scott – August 2022
‘Superb course and very well delivered. Tal goes above and beyond using his Engineering skills and experience to make all course content relatable to the real world.’
Matthew Griffiths – December 2023
Hi Tal, thank you very much for your email and for letting me know my results. I am extremely pleased with the outcome, which would not be at all possible without your course and knowledge!
It was a tough course, probably one of the toughest I have sat in my career, but it does however make it that much more worthwhile to have passed.
I’d like to extend my thanks to you and the team for a seamless onboarding process and I look forward to attending other courses at C&P in the future and looking forward to seeing how your new facility develops, which I am sure will be to an excellent standard!
Jay Balena – January 2024
Please Note: Failure to report promptly each day may result in you missing vital elements of the course and will prevent you from receiving your certificate. As part of the training involves communication in hazardous situations, it is essential that all participants can read, speak and understand English fluently.
